Activities
As Nepal’s tourism capital, Pokhara offers an abundance of things to do and see. The city is surrounded by hills and also has a charming lake called Fewa Taal. Around this body of water, the Lakeside district boasts various shops, restaurants, cafes and enough tourist activities to offer something for everyone.
World Peace
Pagoda hike
Hiking up to the World Peace Pagoda, also known as the Shanti Stupa, involves a relatively short hike (about 1.5 hours going uphill) but it rewards you with uninterrupted views of Fewa Lake and Himalayan mountain ranges.
To begin the hike, you will need to hire a boat driver to row you across the lake, but this adds to the fun of the adventure.
At the top of the hill where the Peace Pagoda is situated, there are a few restaurants and coffee shops where you can stop for a meal or drink before hiking back down. All in all, it can be done in half a day or less.
Sarangkot Hike
Sarangkot is a hill station at an altitude of about 1500m above sea level. It takes a few hours to walk all the way up there from Lakeside, but it offers panoramic views that can’t be found anywhere else. On a clear day, snow-capped Himalayan mountain peaks are visible as far as the eye can see, as well as a bird’s eye view of the lake and surrounding urban areas.
If hiking all day is not your idea of a fun activity, then the Annapurna Cable Car running from Lakeside to Sarangkot might be the right solution for you. This option will give you all of the stunning views, but you won’t have to work up a sweat.
Shiva Mandir Hike
The route to the Shiva Mandir starts the same way as the Peace Pagoda hike, except it requires another hour or two to reach the destination. The Shiva Mandir at Pumdikot hill station is the second highest Shiva statue in Nepal and it’s quite impressive to behold.
All in all, crossing the lake and hiking to and from this viewpoint takes up most of the day, but the giant Shiva temple and the views along the way make it all worthwhile!
Adventurous
Activities
If you or your family enjoy experiences that get adrenaline coursing through your veins, then Pokhara has a number of exciting options.
Kayaking or SUPing
on Fewa Lake
If you’re into water sports, then Pokhara’s main lake has a few varieties on offer. It’s possible to rent a kayak or stand-up paddle board (SUP) on an hourly or daily basis.
Besides helping you get your daily dose of cardio, these water sports will also give you exceptional views of Lakeside, the surrounding hills and even the Himalaya mountains in the distance.
If you’d prefer to have someone else row the boat for you, this is also an available service.
Horse Riding
Paragliding
This activity is not for the faint-hearted, but for those who aren’t afraid of running off the side of a hill and flying with the eagles, it’s certainly an experience you won’t forget.
Pokhara is a paragliding hotspot, and people come from all over the world to soar through the air above Fewa Lake.
